The Pumas graduated four players last season, all four-year starters, and welcome back a number of the Great Lakes Football Conference (GLFC) top performers from a year ago. With seven games away from Alumni Stadium last year, SJC features a more balanced schedule this season with six home games.

The Pumas open the 2009 campaign against Hillsdale College for the second consecutive year hoping to atone from last seasons setback in week one. The Charges defeated the Pumas 49-6 at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium with a skilled offensive attack. SJC will also re-open a historic rivalry with Valparaiso University in week two. The Crusaders and Pumas will meet for the 62nd time in history with the Pumas holding a slim three game lead on VU.
