
Cal U. mascot charged in homecoming float arson

CALIFORNIA – The California University of Pennsylvania student who dresses as the school’s mascot modeled after the Roman god of fire is facing charges he set fire to a homecoming float Sunday.
District Judge Joshua Kanalis has issued an arrest warrant for the student, James E. Shaffer, 20, who’s the Cal U. Vulcan, on arson and related charges.
However, Shaffer since has been admitted to a medical facility, Cal U. spokeswoman Christine Kindl said. The student’s health is the primary concern at this point, Kindle said.
A California Borough police officer found Shaffer, of Johnstown, dressed in his costume at the float shortly after it was set afire about 3:50 p.m. at Second Street and East Alley, court records show.
