September 15, 2012 - The Hillsdale College football team came into the 2012 season heralded for its offensive firepower. But the team secured its second straight victory on the strength of a complete game by its defense.
The Chargers held GLIAC newcomer Malone out of the end zone for the game's final 52 minutes in a 27-10 victory Saturday night at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium. Hillsdale is now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC, and will head to Ohio next week for its first-ever matchup with Notre Dame College. The Pioneers are 0-2 this season.
The Chargers opened the game with a touchdown on their first drive to jump ahead 7-0. Malone, using an option-based offense, struck back immediately, tying the game 7-7 with eight minutes left in the first quarter. But that would be the last time the Pioneers would see paydirt, as the Hillsdale defense limited Malone to 59 total yards on the Pioneers' last seven offensive drives of the game. By contrast, Malone generated 174 total yards on its first three drives of the contest.
Senior QB Anthony Mifsud connected with his favorite target, fellow senior Cam White, for two touchdown passes in the first quarter. White bounced off of, and dragged defenders with him all over the field, and muscled his way into the end zone on TD catches of 28 and four yards to give Hillsdale a 14-10 halftime lead.
The Charger defense took over from there, led in large part to the superior play of All-GLIAC linebacker Brett Pasche. A junior, Pasche set a new season-high with 14 total tackles, including seven solo stops and one sack that paced the team's terrific effort on defense in the second half.
Sophomore defensive lineman Ian Sheldon also put together his best game of his young career, picking up five total tackles and one sack, his first as a collegian.
Defensive linemen Nathan Bundy and Joe Snyder also teamed up on a sack, as the Charger defense was able to generate more and more pressure on the Malone backfield as the game wore on. The Pioneers were just 3 for 9 on third-down conversions in the second half.
Senior RB Joe Glendening moved into second place on Hillsdale's all-time rushing list with 137 yards on 27 carries. He now only trails Scott Schulte in career rushing yards, and his 22-yard touchdown in the third quarter tied him with Nate Clark for second place on the Chargers' all-time career touchdowns list (51). Glendening needs one more TD to tie Vinnie Panizzi for the career touchdowns record, set back in 2009.
Mifsud went 18 for 29 for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He tossed a gorgeous scoring pass to junior Andrew Mott to wrap up the scoring in the fourth quarter. Mifsud gave a shoulder fake to the defense, and Mott smartly slipped behind the coverage for the easy score.
Mott led the team with six receptions for 80 yards, while White hauled in five passes for 67 yards.
Other defensive standouts for the Chargers included Tim Moinet (nine total tackles) and Steven Embry (eight total tackles). Defensive back Nick Galvan played a very active game for Hillsdale with six total stops.
