Teen Mayor Busted

He made news across the world when he was elected mayor of Hillsdale at age 18.

Now he's making news for just doing crazy things 19 year-olds do. It seems Michael Sessions has some pretty strong computer skills and put them to work in a hacking prank that back-fired big time on him.

From the Detroit News.

Michael Sessions' youth earned him national publicity in 2005 as he became one of the youngest mayors in the United States.
On Tuesday, the 19-year-old mayor of Hillsdale blamed his youth for garnering the wrong type of attention -- a misdemeanor conviction.

A day earlier, Sessions pleaded no contest to sending an e-mail under someone else's name to the mother of a former friend, accusing him of drinking and running around with women.

In return for the plea, prosecutors dropped a more serious charge: that Sessions had hacked into the friend's MySpace and America Online accounts to delete his lists of personal contacts with their addresses and phone numbers.

"Young people make mistakes," he said. "We all make mistakes."

Sessions, who was convicted of malicious annoyance by writing, was ordered by a Hillsdale County district judge to perform 40 hours of community service and pay $850 in restitution and $100 in court costs.

Note the above statement. It was not made by a supporter of the mayor, but the mayor himself.

If someone is truly sorry, then they are sorry without trying to excuse the behavior.

I jumped on the mayor's bandwagon last year because I saw a ton of potential in Mr. Sessions. Here is a guy who truly bridges the gap between Hillsdale and Hillsdale College. He generated a ton of positive buzz around the world. Now he is taking the heat for some stuff that is a pretty big deal. He is lucky he isn't looking at a lot more heat. The recall effort is in effect. We will have to see where this all goes.

To your comment, I totally agree. Never ruin an apology with an excuse.

Long and bizzare reading, but to make a long story short, it appears a Hillsdale Public School system employee was handing out passwords to the young mayor. No word if this person still has their job though.
