Charger Football Recruit Korte Capping Stellar HS Baseball Career

Of all the impressive career numbers he's amassed, there's one that sticks out like a 90 mph fastball for Catholic Central senior Tom Korte.

He's partial to the number because it measures not only ability but consistency, which if there is a legacy that Korte would like to leave behind after four extraordinary years on the Cougars baseball team it's that.

The number that sticks out to Korte is a remarkable .462 career average that makes him one of the top three dozen hitters ever to play Michigan high school baseball.

"Yeah, it's probably my batting average," Korte said. "Because the last four years have been pretty consistent. I've hit the ball well all those years -- that's what sticks out. I haven't been an up-and-down player."

Soon to be a four-time All-City third baseman, Korte, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 230 pounds, has been anything but that.

According to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Web site, Korte's career .462 batting average in 364 at-bats ranks 25th on the all-time list regardless of class. It's also eighth in Division 2.

According to the Web site, no other West Michigan ballplayer even has a career mark of at least .450.

Charger Recruit Waldie Begins Quest for Sprint Titles

Southview hopes to sprint to third straight NLL boys title

Aaron Waldie has been running in street races with twins Malcom and Michael Campbell since grade school.

They grew up chasing each other around their Sylvania neighborhood. Bragging rights about who was the fastest runner was always at stake.

Years later, they're still involved in foot races. The only difference is the fleet-footed trio are Southview teammates.

Waldie and the Campbells represent the nucleus of the Cougars boys track team seeking a third straight Northern Lakes League championship tonight at Maumee High.

"It's really great chemistry with us," Waldie said. "We all know what we're thinking and we know how we have to push each other."

The Cougars have done a solid job of pushing one another in recent years. They've also been good at staying ahead of the pack when it comes to running down the NLL championship.

"It's our senior year and it's our last chance at it," Malcolm Campbell said. "It would be a waste to win it the past two years and not win it this year."

Waldie, an All-Ohio football player who will attend Hillsdale College, ranks among the area's fastest for the 100 meters (11.0) and 200 (22.6). Waldie is a favorite to sweep the sprint events at the league meet.

Worden Leaves Hillsdale for MIS

Dennis Worden has been named manager of Public Relations for Michigan International Speedway. A Concord native, Worden now resides in Hillsdale and served as the director of Sports Information for Hillsdale College. He was previously employed in media relations with Wayne State University, Alma College and the University of Texas. He is a 1999 graduate of Central Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. In addition, Worden also spent three seasons (2002-2004) working on the race weekend media center staff for MIS.

Stadium Work Progressing

Hillsdale's Muddy Waters Stadium is taking on a new look as crews continue to install the new Prograss artificial playing surface. With much of the work completed, the field is reminiscent of most recent glory days of Hillsdale football that include the 1985 national championship and the Chargers' last league title in 1992.
