VICKSBURG — To say Drew Mallery has his heart set on playing linebacker is not entirely accurate.
"No,
not at all. I was willing to play any position," the Vicksburg senior
said about his college football recruitment. "I'm still willing to play
any position that coach sees will help the team most."
Hillsdale
College sees the 6-foot-2, 225-pounder as a linebacker in its program.
And don't get Mallery wrong — he's not disappointed. Everything seemed
right at Hillsdale, so he committed to the Chargers.
"It's really a
great compliment because not many people get to go play college
football, let alone the position they love," said Mallery, a Gazette
all-area performer who had 149 tackles in the 2011 season, including 22
for loss, five sacks, four forced fumbles and three recoveries.
"Being
linebacker, the way I would compare it, it's basically the quarterback
of the defense. I was making calls, making checks at the line — just a
sense of leadership that you can give while you're out there."
Mallery,
a 3.8 student who plans to major in sports management and minor in
finance, is receiving "the highest football (scholarship) money that
they can give," Vicksburg coach Tom Marchese said about the Chargers,
who won the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title.
