Sidelined by injury, Nate English watched last year’s state meet. This year, he was on the medal stand

Standing atop the medal podium Saturday as a state champion gave Nate English a starkly different view than the one he had the same time just one year ago.
Having missed his entire junior track season recovering from surgery to repair a cracked navicular bone in his foot, the Hillsdale senior smashed the Division 3 state meet record with a shot put of 59 feet, 8.5 inches, more than a foot better than the previous record of 58–5.75.
“I watched the state meet every year since I was in seventh grade, and being in high school I figured I’d be able to compete at it every year,” English said. “Last year, it hurt emotionally just to watch and this year it felt so good to get in that ring and throw again. It was probably one of the greatest feelings in the world to be able to win it.”
