D2football.com: Tony Nicolette's Week 5 Recaps
D2football.com: Week Five Recaps
We had plenty of excitement in the first weekend of divisional play, including several overtime finishes. As we prep for "Rivalry Week", most of the clubs that were expected to be competitive have been looking the part. Can they keep things going as their schedule's continue to stiffen? Let's see how they faired on Saturday:
Findlay 43, Notre Dame 42 - 2OT
Hey...there's that Notre Dame team that we all know and love, playing in a high-scoring track meet! After two straight week's of clunkers the Falcons gave the Oilers all they could handle, including putting together an 80-yard drive to tie the game with less than a minute to go. Unfortunately for NDC, a missed FG and a missed PAT in overtime ended up costing them a victory as Findlay held on to run their record to 3-1. Monterae Williams led the Oiler attack by racking up 121 yards and two scores on the ground, and Brandon Butler tallied 21 tackles to pace the UF defense. Pedro Powell had 162 yards and three scores rushing for Notre Dame in the losing cause.
Wayne State 21, Northwood 11
The Warriors took another step forward this week after looking sluggish in their first two contests, as Toney Davis pounded the Northwood defense 29 times for 159 yards and two TD's. The Woodies had their chances, as a couple of first half drives went deep into WSU territory only to come up empty. Once WSU took advantage and got the lead up to 21-3, NU was forced to start throwing it and that simply isn't their strength. Beyond that, the Wayne defense was solid as they held Northwood to less than four yards per carry, including clamping down on NU QB Aaron Shavers (25 carries, 28 yards).
Malone 33, Tiffin 27 - 2OT
Tiffin put together a furious comeback, scoring 10 points in the last three minutes of regulation to send this one into extra frames. The Dragon magic ended there, however, as Malone found pay-dirt in the second extra session to earn their first GLIAC win. Malik Felton scored the winning TD for the Pioneers, his second on the day to go along with 130 yards rushing. Malone QB Truman Franklin tossed two TD passes after stepping in for starter Will Szpor.
Hillsdale 44, Northern Michigan 6
I mentioned that the Chargers would likely send the staff home early in this one, and that's exactly what happened as Hillsdale handled their business for the fourth straight week. Nine different receivers made grabs for Hillsdale, as three different QB's saw playing time. Starter Anthony Mifsud threw two TD tosses in his limited time, both of which came from long distance (38 and 75 yards). Joe Glendening was also his typical self with 106 yards and three TD's on the ground, and the Charger defense chipped-in by picking off Ryan Morley four times. Prince Young had 116 yards for the Wildcats in the loss.
Grand Valley 51, Michigan Tech 43
For about 40 minutes, Grand Valley looked like the team that LakerNation typically expects. They were up 51-14, and were consistently torching the GLIAC's best defense. More importantly, the GV defense completely shut down the Husky power running attack. The Tech passing game finally caught fire from there, however, and the Huskies managed to post four straight TD's to close the gap to a single possession. The Laker O finished it out from there, but the GV staff has to be concerned with another game that saw their club hold a big lead late only to watch it disappear. Concern aside, they are undoubtedly happy about their offense continuing to perform at a high level despite an improbably rash of injuries. Isiah Grimes threw for 411 yards and four TD's in his second collegiate start, and Kirk Spencer cashed in his first career start at RB with 136 yards and a score on the ground. Charles Johnson was once again Charles Johnson with seven catches for 165 yards and three TD's. While the Huskies only managed 34 rushing yards on the game, Tyler Scarlett was hot via the air in the second half connecting for 441 yards and five TD's, including four to Matt Curtin (11 rec, 190 yds).
Ashland 68, Lake Erie 21
Ashland QB Taylor Housewright (19-30, 305 yds) made it three straight contests with four TD passes, and Jordan McCune added 102 yards and two TD's on only ten carries as the Eagles cruised. Lake Erie tried to exchange punches early, but had two first half turnovers that set-up Ashland TD drives of 20 yards or less. You can't do that against anyone, let alone a quality team and expect to get away with it...The Storm didn't. Anthony Capasso was Housewright's favorite target on the evening hauling in six grabs for 93 yards and two TD's. Anthony Bilal notched 103 yards and two TD's rushing for Lake Erie.
Ohio Dominican 24, Walsh 13
Despite racking up 537 yards of offense, ODU couldn't put Walsh away until the fourth quarter. Turning the ball over will do that to you, and the Panthers gave it up three times. Other than that they dominated, possessing the ball for more than 35 minutes thanks to 297 yards on the ground. After his eye-popping performance a week ago at Grand Valley, Brandon Shoen followed-up with another big day registering 139 yards and a TD. The Panther passing game offered nice balance as well, with QB Mark Miller (18-21, 240 yds, TD, INT) and Abe Johnson (7 rec, 128 yds) having nice days. On the whole, the Walsh offense just couldn't get any rhythm or cash in on the ODU mistakes. One bright spot was the passing offense took a big step forward. Both scores (71 and 40 yds) came via the air, and WR Anthony Schrock had a great day with seven grabs for 187 yards and a TD.
Saginaw Valley 31, Ferris State 24 - OT
Just above, I talked about how turnovers could have cost Ohio Dominican dearly. In this one, they did Ferris in. The Bulldogs suffered through four giveaways, including one that set-up a game-tying TD for Saginaw Valley late in regulation. So, instead of earning a win in Saginaw after running all over (literally...FSU had 439 yards rushing) the Cards, the Bulldogs head West on M-20 thinking about "what could have been". Ferris QB Jason VanderLaan didn't do much via the air...and he didn't need to as he lugged it 32 times for 254 yards and two TD's on the ground. Give credit also to the FSU defense, which after being torched multiple times this year held the league's best passing offense relatively in check (SV had 255 passing yards). Tim Hogue led the Cardinal offense with 86 yards and a TD on the ground, and seven catches for 75 yards and two more TD's via the air. While SV managed to snag the win on Homecoming, that's two straight home games where they have allowed more than 500 yards of offense. That lack of defense has already cost them once this year, and you have to wonder how many more times Saginaw Valley (and Grand Valley, for that matter) can get away with giving up so much production to opposing offenses.
It is Rivalry Week in the GLIAC as Hillsdale travels to Wayne State
No more playing with patsies for the Chargers. For this team to "leave no doubt" and handle "unfinished business" Hillsdale will have to get a W on a field it hasn't since 1998. The last time Hillsdale won in Detroit was in 2004 but that game was played at Ford Field.
The fates have been unkind to the Chargers lately against the Warriors. Last year Joe Glendening was lost due to a concussion in a 27-24 overtime loss. The year before in Detroit saw Hillsdale fall 14-9 after a Troy Weatherhead redzone pass went for a pick six. In 2009 Hillsdale manhandled Wayne at home but fell 7-14 in 2008.
Hillsdale has hit on all cylinders since an opening week 8 point loss to Cal, PA. Wayne too fell in its opener by a touchdown but has three straight wins over Lake Erie, Malone, and Northwood.
Kickoff is at noon on Saturday. This one is going to be BIG and so is the rest of the GLIAC slate this week.
Tiffin at Findlay, noon
Saginaw Valley at Northwood, noon
Michigan Tech at Northern Michigan, 1:00
Ashland at Ohio Dominican, 1:00
Malone at Walsh, 6:00
Ferris State at Grand Valley, 7:00
Lake Erie at Notre Dame College, 7:00

HillsdaleChargers.com: No Contest
Box Score
September 29, 2012 - The Hillsdale College football team went about winning its fourth game in a row in business-like fashion.
Dominating Northern Michigan University from start to finish, the Chargers improved to 4-1 on the season with a 44-6 dismantling of the Wildcats on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium. Hillsdale is 4-0 in the GLIAC heading into next weekend's showdown with Wayne State University in downtown Detroit. NMU falls to 1-4 on the season with the loss.
This was one of those games where the statistical differences between the teams was accurately reflected in the final score. Hillsdale outgained Northern Michigan 488-227, held a huge time-of-possession edge - particularly in the first half - ran 19 more plays and averaged 2.5 more yards per play than the Wildcats.
Hillsdale set the tone early with a drive that so far, represents a snapshot of its season. The Chargers grinded their way down the field to the tune of 13 plays that took up more than seven minutes on their opening possession, capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by senior QB Anthony Mifsud. He rolled out to the right and had a clear run-pass option, but smartly found a hole in the NMU defense and galloped in for the score.
The Chargers finished the first quarter with a 13-0 lead after the first of three rushing touchdowns by senior RB Joe Glendening. His first score was the longest, as he cut against the grain and scored from 28 yards out.
Junior LB Brett Pasche picked off a pass at midfield later in the second quarter to set up the Chargers' third score. One play after the turnover, Mifsud lofted a gorgeous 38-yard touchdown pass to junior WR Andrew Mott, who timed his leaping catch perfectly to put Hillsdale up 20-0 with 12:51 left in the second quarter.
Pasche enjoyed another big game defensively for Hillsdale, with a sack, interception and six total tackles. Hillsdale intercepted three passes in the game, giving it seven over the past two. Nick Galvan picked off two passes, giving him three over the past two weeks, and Butch Herzog snagged himself a pick in the ballgame.
The Chargers went into halftime with a 34-3 lead, and held the ball for more than 21 of the first half's 30 minutes. NMU moved the ball more effectively in the second half after being held to just 48 yards in the first half, but the Charger defense prevented the Wildcats from finding the end zone at any point in the contest.
WR Evan Bach hauled in a 75-yard touchdown pass from Mifsud to make the score 41-3 early in the third quarter. With Mifsud rolling out, Bach read the defense to perfection, separating from the defensive back, running himself open for Mifsud, who hit him in stride for the big play.
Freshman kicker Paul Wendy scored his first collegiate points with a 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to close the scoring for Hillsdale.
Glendening got just one carry in the second half, and finished with 24 attempts for 106 yards and three touchdowns. Glendening's career touchdowns record now stands at 56, extending the record he broke last week.
Mifsud was 14-for-17 for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Redshirt freshman QB Jacob Richter got into his first collegiate game and completed a pass to WR Evan Sassack.
Nine different receivers caught passes for the Chargers, led by Mott's four receptions for 80 yards. Bach caught three passes for 98 yards, and three players had two catches apiece.
Junior LB Steven Embry led Hillsdale with 11 total tackles on defense, while teammate Devin Moynihan had nine. Ian Sheldon and David Galginaitis teamed up for a sack, and The Chargers had four tackles-for-loss as a team.

Wayback Machine: Is Muddy Waters Stadium haunted?
Here is a re-post from November of 2005. It's one of my favorite Hillsdale legends.
Lots of cool photos and articles but the neatest section was a legend about the Indian princess Winona, for whom the yearbook is still named.
She was the great Chief Baw Beese's first born but didn't care much for her arranged marriage because she really loved the brave Ash Te Wette. Having had enough of her husband, she killed him with a hatchet.
Having no choice, Baw Beese had to have Winona executed. He disappeared with her body for days.
Years later a female skeleton wearing Winona's silver cross was found in the lake that bears her name and is located just behind the northeast corner of Muddy Waters Stadium.
The legend says that on an Indian Summer day, if you look out across the lake, you can see the ghostly figures of Winona with Baw Beese standing by her side.
Jerry Glanville used to leave tickets for Elvis and the Phantom of the Opera, Coach Otterbein might want to leave a pair for these guys at Will Call as well.
Is Muddy Waters Stadium Haunted?
I just got a Hillsdale College yearbook from the early 1940's in the mail that I bought for 9 bucks on eBay.Lots of cool photos and articles but the neatest section was a legend about the Indian princess Winona, for whom the yearbook is still named.

D2football.com's Tony Nicolette Week 5 Preview #d2fb
Northern Michigan (0-3, 1-3) at #13 Hillsdale (3-0, 3-1)
Despite their opening loss against a tough opponent, there are few teams in this league that have been more solid or consistent through the first month than Hillsdale. The Chargers have sinced chewed up their three Southies, and have the good fortune of opening their North slate against that division's only under-performer. Northern Michigan has had its struggles with a young coaching staff, a redshirt-freshman quarterback, and a team that is pretty inexperienced in general. Add to that their strange inability to play with any consistency on the road and this could be a long season for the Wildcats.
Northern HAS to find a way to get a couple of quick, early scores. If Anthony Mifsud and the Charger offense are allowed grind clock and put together 10+ play scoring drives in the first half (especially from in front), this one will be over fast. Northern simply hasn't shown the firepower thus far to be able to come back from any real deficit, and certainly not the ones that they have seen in their three GLIAC tilts thus far. Making matters worse, the 'Cats have only posted 21 first-half points through three games. Given that, I'm not liking their chances to get those "quick-and-earlies" I mentioned previously.
Look, barring some sort of bizarre haze/funk, I just don't see Hillsdale allowing this to be close. Joe G has taken over the GLIAC rushing lead in conference play (and somehow it has been done rather quietly), so he's right on pace with the type of production we would all expect. Look for him and his first string offense to have their typical day at the office...well, OK, maybe it's a casual Friday where they go home early. Hillsdale 52, Northern 17.

Hillsdale Still Unranked in Coaches Poll
The Hillsdale College football team improved to 3-1 on the season by scoring the most points in program history since the 1960's. It got them a few more votes in the AFCA coaches poll, but not enough to be ranked.
The d2football.com poll will be out tomorrow where the Chargers are currently ranked #15. With the 13th and 14th ranked teams losing, Hillsdale should be just outside the Top 10. The D2 poll is conducted by journalists who cover the division.
Talk about disparity between two groups of opinions.
The best thing about these polls is that they are like an office pool: for entertainment purposes only.

A Win for the Ages: Hillsdale rolls to 63-14 victory in school's 600th win.
It was a historic afternoon in Lyndhurst, Ohio as Hillsdale picked up the school's 600th all-time victory with a 63-14 throttling of Notre Dame College.

D2football.com Tony Nicolette's Week 4 GLIAC Preview
Tony Nicolette from D2football.com breaks down Chargers and Falcons as well as the rest of the league's Week 4 action.
#15 Hillsdale (2-1) at Notre Dame (1-2)
For me, the primary story here is to see just what the heck Notre Dame will do on offense. After two weeks of moving the ball virtually at will, the Falcons didn't do squat in week three. While I absolutely give credit to Northwood's defense for their hand in that, I'm not entirely certain that it was solely the work of the Woodies that netted such a result. I mean, no offense to them but their rep over the last couple of years has not exactly been that of a team that will hold the nation's leading rusher to 64 yards and relegate a hard-running club to throwing the ball for half of the game or more. So, will the Falcons be able to move the ball on the ground against Hillsdale? With the youth of the Hillsdale front there should be some room for Pedro Powell, but given that Hillsdale as struggled more so this year in defending the pass, going to the air with Ray Russ might be what NDC chooses to do. Watch out for Powell to possibly have a low number game again, but for the Falcons to potentially have more success overall on offense.
While we sit and wonder whether or not the Notre Dame offense will be able to regain its effectiveness, one thing I'm about 99% sure of is that the Falcon defense isn't likely to lend much of a hand. To this point, they just have not shown the ability to consistently get stops. They have forced only five total punts in three games, and the eight turnovers they have generated thus far all came in the opener against Mercyhurst. The NDC defense is allowing 58 points per game, and really has not shown the ability to shut down anyone they have faced thus far.
While Hillsdale might not be able to shut down the Falcon offense completely, the Chargers should have no issues moving the ball at will. Any attempts by NDC to possibly try and "shorten" the game really won't work, as Hillsdale likes to be efficient and limit offensive possessions anyway. Unless Hillsdale commits an uncharacteristically high number of turnovers, I'm having a hard time seeing the Falcons being in this at crunch time. Hillsdale 50, Notre Dame 28.

599 and Counting. Hillsdale goes for milestone win at Notre Dame College #d2fb
Hillsdale College has always been an extremely proud football program, even through some of the lean years of the past decade the expectations have always been that Charger football be a contender in the GLIAC conference and relevant on the national scene.
That proud program goes for a milestone win on Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame College. A win will be the 600th in its history as Hillsdale enters the contest with the Falcons at 599-389-46 all-time.
Here is the cool irony surrounding the attempt. Hillsdale's first victory in program history, a 14-12 shellacking came in 1892 against Notre Dame...the more famous one, the one in South Bend...although the Fighting Irish brass (even before Brian Kelly) still refuse to acknowledge it. Number 600 could potentially come against the slightly lesser known Notre Dame College in suburban Cleveland.
Hillsdale will have its hands full though before it can chalk up the win as the Falcons feature the nation's leading rusher in Pedro Powell.
Game time is 1:00 PM Eastern.

WEEK 4 FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Chargers to face test in high-powered Falcons
GLIAC's top two rushers square off Saturday
GLIAC's top two rushers square off Saturday
September 19, 2012 – For the second week in a
row, the Hillsdale College football team will play an opponent for the
very first time.
After back-to-back wins inside the friendly confines of Frank “Muddy” Waters Stadium, the Chargers venture out to suburban Cleveland to take on Notre Dame College at 1 p.m. Saturday in the third and final GLIAC “crossover” game of the season. Hillsdale comes into the game with a 2-1 record and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while the Falcons are 1-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
After a week 1 defeat at No. 6 California (Pa.), the Chargers have bounced back nicely in their last two matchups, jumping out to a 38-0 lead against Ohio Dominican Sept. 8, then keeping Malone University out of the end zone over the final 52 minutes of the Sept. 15 win. Since surrendering 21 first-half points to California, the Charger defense has been especially stingy, with the full first-team defense allowing a grand total of 19 points in nine quarters since then.
Against the Pioneers last week, Hillsdale’s defense got stronger as the game went along. After allowing Malone to generate 174 yards of total offense on its first three drives, the Chargers shut the Pioneers down to the tune of 59 total yards over their last seven drives of the game, less than nine total yards per drive.
That Hillsdale defense will be tested against a Notre Dame College offense that has already opened some eyes with its explosiveness in its first (and only) year in the GLIAC.
The Falcons opened the 2012 with a wild 59-42 win over Mercyhurst College on Aug. 30. NDC scored 38 points in the first half, and led 52-29 at the end of the third quarter. The Falcons rang up 543 yards of total offense in that game, including 367 on the ground.
The following week, Notre Dame College put 46 points up on the board against No. 4-ranked Grand Valley State. The Falcons gave up 83 of their own in the basketball-esque 83-46 final score, but generating that kind of offense against a team as highly regarded as the Lakers, in Lubbers Stadium, made many Division II football observers stand up and take notice.
Notre Dame College is led by tailback Pedro Powell, who currently leads the GLIAC with 483 rushing yards on the season. Hillsdale’s All-American running back Joe Glendening is second in rushing yards with 317, and isn’t fair from a major milestone in Charger football history.
Glendening needs two touchdowns to break Vinnie Panizzi’s all-time record for total career touchdowns at Hillsdale. Glendening’s 22-yard score in last week’s win over Malone gave him 51 for his career, tying him with Nate Clark for second place on the list. Panizzi currently holds the record with 52.
The Charger offense will be going up against a Falcon defense that is giving up an average of 58 points and 481 total yards per game this season. Notre Dame College went 5-6 as an independent in 2011. Last week, Northwood defeated NDC 49-14.

Hillsdale.edu: Pasche spearheads strong defensive effort in football team's win over Malone
Original Post
Box Score
September 15, 2012 - The Hillsdale College football team came into the 2012 season heralded for its offensive firepower. But the team secured its second straight victory on the strength of a complete game by its defense.
The Chargers held GLIAC newcomer Malone out of the end zone for the game's final 52 minutes in a 27-10 victory Saturday night at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium. Hillsdale is now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC, and will head to Ohio next week for its first-ever matchup with Notre Dame College. The Pioneers are 0-2 this season.
The Chargers opened the game with a touchdown on their first drive to jump ahead 7-0. Malone, using an option-based offense, struck back immediately, tying the game 7-7 with eight minutes left in the first quarter. But that would be the last time the Pioneers would see paydirt, as the Hillsdale defense limited Malone to 59 total yards on the Pioneers' last seven offensive drives of the game. By contrast, Malone generated 174 total yards on its first three drives of the contest.
Senior QB Anthony Mifsud connected with his favorite target, fellow senior Cam White, for two touchdown passes in the first quarter. White bounced off of, and dragged defenders with him all over the field, and muscled his way into the end zone on TD catches of 28 and four yards to give Hillsdale a 14-10 halftime lead.
The Charger defense took over from there, led in large part to the superior play of All-GLIAC linebacker Brett Pasche. A junior, Pasche set a new season-high with 14 total tackles, including seven solo stops and one sack that paced the team's terrific effort on defense in the second half.
Sophomore defensive lineman Ian Sheldon also put together his best game of his young career, picking up five total tackles and one sack, his first as a collegian.
Defensive linemen Nathan Bundy and Joe Snyder also teamed up on a sack, as the Charger defense was able to generate more and more pressure on the Malone backfield as the game wore on. The Pioneers were just 3 for 9 on third-down conversions in the second half.
Senior RB Joe Glendening moved into second place on Hillsdale's all-time rushing list with 137 yards on 27 carries. He now only trails Scott Schulte in career rushing yards, and his 22-yard touchdown in the third quarter tied him with Nate Clark for second place on the Chargers' all-time career touchdowns list (51). Glendening needs one more TD to tie Vinnie Panizzi for the career touchdowns record, set back in 2009.
Mifsud went 18 for 29 for 216 yards and three touchdowns. He tossed a gorgeous scoring pass to junior Andrew Mott to wrap up the scoring in the fourth quarter. Mifsud gave a shoulder fake to the defense, and Mott smartly slipped behind the coverage for the easy score.
Mott led the team with six receptions for 80 yards, while White hauled in five passes for 67 yards.
Other defensive standouts for the Chargers included Tim Moinet (nine total tackles) and Steven Embry (eight total tackles). Defensive back Nick Galvan played a very active game for Hillsdale with six total stops.

Division II Football Coaches Poll: Fraud, Sham, and a Joke #d2fb
The American Football Coaches Poll is an absolute fraud, sham, and a joke.
Hillsdale entered last week ranked 25th in the nation. The Chargers dominated Ohio Dominican 38-0 for 3 quarters before ODU tacked on some meaningless points at the end.
Six teams in front of Hillsdale lost. You would expect Hillsdale to move up at least a little, right?
Wrong.
Hillsdale dropped completely out of the poll with two other schools Minnesota State-Mankato and Central Missouri getting more votes than them.
This poll is worthless. If you care to see it, click here. What a joke!

Glendening gets 50th TD as a Hillsdale Charger
Hillsdale College's Joe Glendening scores his 50th career touchdown - Patrick Heckenlively photo |
Glendening walked in with a 1 yard run in the first quarter and then busted off a vintage break away fifty-six yard score in the second quarter. Joe the Show's final tally was a three yarder and put Hillsdale up 38-0 in the third quarter.
The Chargers would go on to win 38-20 as Ohio Dominican added some late points. Glendening finished with 180 yards on 35 carries.
Looks like Louie the Laker couldn't make it.

Charger football team notches first win of season in dominating fashion
Box score
September 8, 2012 - The start was the same, but the ending was quite different. And the Hillsdale College football team couldn't have been happier.
Playing its home opener in front of more than 2,300 fans, the Charger football team raced out to a 38-0 lead over Ohio Dominican before wrapping up a 38-20 GLIAC victory Saturday night at Frank "Muddy" Waters Stadium.
Hillsdale, ranked 25th in the nation, is now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC on the season. The Chargers are back home next Saturday night for their first-ever meeting with Malone University at 7 p.m.
The post-game scene was much different than the last time Ohio Dominican came to Hillsdale, exactly 11 months ago. The Panthers rallied from a 21-point deficit to shock the Chargers in a 43-42 win. This time, the 21-point lead would only grow, once Hillsdale jumped out to it.
Using a methodically paced offense and some big plays on defense, Hillsdale put together a superb all-around effort in this contest. The Chargers generated 420 yards of offense compared to 244 for the Panthers, and Hillsdale intercepted four passes on the evening.

Recruiting: Big QB and Lineman visiting Saturday
You don't get much recruiting insight at the Division II level. Thanks to TheDZone.net we know of a couple of players planning on visiting Hillsdale on Saturday night for the Chargers' home opener.
6'6" quarterback Joe Kutil from Notre Dame Prep is reportedly visiting as is OL/DL Grant Clark from Clinton.

d2football.com: Tony Nicolette GLIAC preview
Tony breaks down Chargers and Panthers as well as the rest of the league.
Ohio Dominican (1-0) at #17 Hillsdale (0-1)
It almost seems silly to think that the second game of the year is a "big" one, but that may well be the case for Hillsdale. Of course, the home-opener is always important, and this one will be special for the fans and alums as the defense of their 2011 GLIAC Title commences. Additionally, there is a revenge factor here as Hillsdale blew a 12-point edge over the last five minutes of last year's tilt and helped derail their playoff plans in the process. Perhaps most importantly, the Chargers are staring an 0-2 hole in the face and don't want to see their hopes for the year all but dashed when the campaign is all of ten days old. Yep...it may be early, but this is a BIG one.
The Charger offense moved the ball in typical fashion a week ago, but seemed to have trouble closing the deal as they missed a couple of FG's and also had another drive stall on Cal's side of the field. Finishing drives is a key, and I like Hillsdale to do a better job this week against an ODU defense that was decent last year, but hasn't been tested thus far. Another important factor in this game is how new Panther QB Mark Miller deals with a legit D2 defense. His first start a week ago against Virginia-Lynchburg was hardly a test, and while there's little question that he and Ronnel Spates will have some effectiveness via the ground I'm interested to see if Miller can move the ball via the air if the run isn't working. The perceived weakness thus far of the Charger defense is the secondary, and Miller will likely be required to throw at least some in order for ODU to win.
I really believe that ODU is an up-and-comer in this league, and that the Panther program will be one that people dread dealing with very soon. As for 2012, I'm going to wait just a bit and see. I spoke last week about how the two best offensive players of a year ago need to be replaced, and while Miller, Spates and Company won easily last week they essentially beat up a club team...pretty hard for me to put much stock in that. The Chargers are a far more polished team at this point, and they lost a close one to a quality D2 opponent. Add in Coach Otterbein's understanding of what it takes to win important games and I like Hillsdale to come out swinging in this one. Hillsdale 35, ODU 21.

Hillsdale needs its own Cable or Satellite network
Hillsdale needs its own satellite or cable network.
It would be great to see Charger athletics in HD. Even bigger for Hillsdale would be to show all of its speakers like the CCA series, happenings at the Constitution center in DC, and other programs it hosts around the country. Old archived speeches could be played as filler. Hillsdale College has always attracted the rock stars of political thought. In our digital society, there'd be no shortage of eyeballs to see those minds in all parts of the United States.
They are extremely successful advertising on talk radio and could direct that audience to their TV network. Hillsdale's continued existence lies in the generosity of private donations. They could reach a ton of people and by including Charger athletics they would attract a whole new following for those sports which in turn would equal dollars AND players directly to the programs.
The football program gets a handful of kids each year from across the country whose families become fans of the schools through Imprimis mailers and the talk radio ads. It would take an investment in infrastructure and human capital to run and market it, but it could be a 21st century boon for spreading the College's message and brand. The possibilities are really endless as the channel could also be a tool for Jeff Lantis (former Charger wide out on national champs team) and his Admissions Office to show all kinds of promotional materials.
The old bookstore at one time was slated to become a TV studio. That could serve as Command Central for the HCN, Hillsdale College Network.
