Hillsdale's Hixson details Saints Signing
Hillsdale Daily News' Ryan Czachorski caught up with the latest of three Hillsdale College football players to find a home in the National Football League, Nick Hixson who signed with the New Orleans Saints over the weekend.
Hixson, the former Charger and standout defensive back and wide receiver, signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints over the weekend.
“It’s amazing,” Hixson said Monday. “My heart was shaking the whole time when I found out. It’s been a long, long process.”
He spent Thursday through Sunday working out with the Saints, and said he was not necessarily prepared for the news.
“I only brought three changes of clothes, and I had to cancel my flight,” he said.
He signed a standard, three-year contract following the workout.
It comes on the heels of a tryout Hixson had two weekends ago with the Washington Redskins.
He also had an offer to try out as a defensive back with the Saints at the time, but took his shot with the Redskins first.
Washington originally asked him to try out as a wide receiver, which Hixson played during his senior season, then moved him back to the secondary the night before the tryout.
But Hixson said he knew New Orleans was waiting in the wings, as both tryouts were scheduled around the same time.
He said he will fly home Thursday, and then will spend the next month or so working out with the team, and will get a break near the end of June.

Hillsdale.edu: Hillsdale College athletic department earns Division II Presidents' Award for academic achievement
College had 93 percent graduation rate, tops in GLIAC
May 9, 2012 – The Hillsdale College athletic department has earned the first Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence for its 93 percent graduation rate over a four-year timeframe.
The Division II Academic Requirements Committee established the Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence to recognize programs achieving long-term academic success.
The Division II Academic Success Rate measures graduation rates for virtually all Division II student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletically related financial aid. Active and provisional member institutions when the data were submitted for 2010-11 were eligible for the Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence. The four-year ASR measured the entering cohorts from 2001 to 2004, inclusive.
Hillsdale College is the only GLIAC institution honored with this award, which recognizes Division II institutions with a graduation rate of 90 percent or above. The school’s 93 percent graduation rate ranks it tied for 10th among all Division II institutions.
The Division II Academic Success Rate captures about two-third more student-athletes than the federal graduation rate, which does not count incoming transfers, counts outgoing transfers as having not graduated and counts only student-athletes receiving athletically related financial aid. The national four-year ASR average is 72 percent.
Regardless of the measure, Division II student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the general student body. The federal rate for the 2004 entering class of student-athletes was 55 percent, compared to 49 percent for the general student body.

versatile players in recent Hillsdale College football history, has
received an invitation to try out for the NFL's Washington Redskins this
Thursday as a wide receiver. He has not signed a contract, as of Sunday
evening. 
Hixson said he also has an invitation from the New Orleans Saints, but as a cornerback.
Hixson excelled in both roles for the 2011 GLIAC champion Charger football team. He was a three-year starter at defensive back, but also played as the team's primary kick returner, and as a senior, was a wide receiver for Hillsdale as well.
Hixson was a 2011 First-Team All-GLIAC selection in leading Hillsdale to an 8-3 record and its second straight South Division title.
On offense, Hixson was a go-to receiver on third down for the Chargers. He caught 25 passes for 389 yards and two touchdowns. More than half of his catches came on third down, and led directly to first downs.
As a kick returner, Hixson averaged 22.3 yards per kick return, and had a season-long 52-yard kickoff return against Ashland University Sept. 17. In three seasons as a kickoff returner, Hixson piled up 1,635 kick return yards.
But his primary role was at cornerback, and he improved in each of his seasons as a starter for the Chargers. In 2011, Hixson had two interceptions and broke up a team-high nine passes. His speed, height and smarts made him one of the most feared cornerbacks in the conference during his career.
Hixson was named honorable mention All-American by Don Hansen's Football Gazette following the 2011 season.

Hixson joins a list that includes: QB Mark Nicolet, LB Tom Korte, OL Jared Veldheer, PK Mark Petro, DE Drew Berube, WR A.J. Kegg, QB Troy Weatherhead and WR Andre Holmes.
